Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) has become the first U.S. publisher to implement Taboola’s DeeperDive, a next-generation generative AI answer engine, directly on USA TODAY’s website. This strategic move aims to offer users intelligent, real-time answers based on credible journalism from USA TODAY and its expansive USA TODAY Network.
DeeperDive enables readers to engage more deeply with content by offering direct, well-contextualized answers drawn from verified articles. Unlike conventional GenAI tools that pull static data, DeeperDive leverages live editorial content and user behavior trends across Taboola’s global network of over 600 million daily users. Readers can ask questions on diverse topics — from local travel to national politics — and receive detailed, trustworthy responses instantly.
The platform also introduces a monetization advantage for publishers. By integrating contextually relevant ads within the AI-generated results, DeeperDive allows Gannett to capture search-like ad revenue on its own site, driving both user engagement and commercial growth.
“This launch is a major win for Gannett and the wider publishing sector,” said Michael Reed, Chairman and CEO of Gannett | USA TODAY Network. “DeeperDive not only enhances user engagement but also creates new paths for affiliate, subscription, and advertising revenue. It reflects our ongoing digital transformation and commitment to delivering content consumers value.”
Adam Singolda, CEO of Taboola, added, “With DeeperDive, we’re putting the power of GenAI back into the hands of publishers. This tool redefines how users interact with content and opens up new revenue channels.”
Currently in BETA, DeeperDive is available to about 1% of USA TODAY’s 195 million monthly unique visitors and is undergoing live evaluation by human reviewers.
