Lenovo AI Referee View Transforms FIFA World Cup™ Fan Experience

FIFA World Cup™ Fans Embrace Referee View as Lenovo AI Brings Viewers Closer to the Pitch

Lenovo AI Referee View is transforming how football fans experience the FIFA World Cup™. Lenovo AI Referee View: New international research by Lenovo shows how Lenovo AI Referee View is bringing fans closer to the action with advanced AI-powered broadcasting technology. The report also finds that fans are coming to appreciate immersive viewing experiences enabled by artificial intelligence more and more.

The research included football fans in Australia, Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States. The findings reveal that 87% of respondents believe technology has enhanced the way they view matches. 84% also said that close-to-action camera angles make them feel like they are on the pitch.

And a big part of this better viewing experience is Referee View. The technology, which is driven by Lenovo AI, provides a live, real-time, first-person perspective from the referee during matches. The result is an aspect of the game that has never been shown on a football broadcast before.

The survey also revealed a growing appetite for immersive sports broadcasting. 76% of FIFA World Cup™ fans have already seen or heard of the Referee View. And 91% said they liked the close-to-action perspective.

The study also revealed that broadcast quality is still a major priority. Some 88% of respondents said that smooth, stable footage was important to them when watching live sports. Similarly, 98% said clear picture quality was important while watching the FIFA World Cup™.

Ninety-one percent also said they would like to see more technology that delivers immersive and up-close live sports experiences in future tournaments.

“The introduction of Referee View with Lenovo AI image stabilization has further improved the broadcast experience. Getting a steady, first-person view of critical field decisions brings an incredible level of drama and transparency to the screen,” said a Female, Gen X survey respondent based in India.

AI-Powered Video Technology Delivers a New Match Perspective

According to preliminary FIFA data, Referee View has appeared an average of three times during every match. The feature has reached viewers across more than 220 territories worldwide. Consequently, millions of football fans have experienced the game from the referee’s perspective. The system uses a lightweight camera mounted on the match official. Therefore, it captures real-time footage from the center of every important moment. However, raw footage often contains rapid movement and camera shake because of the referee’s constant motion. To solve this challenge, Lenovo developed an AI-powered video analytics platform. The platform automatically processes the footage into smooth, broadcast-quality video in real time. Moreover, the system reduces camera jitter by as much as 60%. It also preserves the speed and intensity of the match while improving viewing comfort.

“Referee View is giving fans a perspective that’s never before been possible, just in time for the world’s biggest sporting event,” said Art Hu, Chief Information Officer, Lenovo and Chief Technology & Delivery Officer, Solutions and Services Group. “By combining AI with advanced video analytics, we’re transforming fast-moving footage into a seamless broadcast experience. Building on Lenovo’s work in F1, where cameras operate in some of sport’s toughest conditions, we’re applying that expertise at the World Cup to help make a referee’s point of view broadcast-ready in real time.”

The technology has also been welcomed by broadcasters. Referee View captures goals, player interactions, team walkouts and other high intensity moments. This makes for a more engaging and transparent viewing experience for audiences all through the tournament.

Lenovo Brings AI Innovation to FIFA World Cup™

As Official Technology Partner of FIFA, Lenovo continues to roll out AI-powered innovations across the tournament. Fans, players, coaches and tournament operations all make use of these technologies. In addition to Referee View, Lenovo also features AI-enabled 3D player avatars, the FIFA AI Pro platform and an intelligent command center.

The solutions suggest, taken as a whole, a larger project by Lenovo to transform sports broadcasting with the help of artificial intelligence. They also help to improve operational efficiencies, while also delivering richer experiences to viewers across the globe. Lenovo’s latest innovations demonstrate how advanced technology is transforming live football coverage and bringing fans closer to every moment on the pitch, as AI develops.
