Rackspace Technology has named Chetan Gupta, Ph.D., as Chief AI Officer. Gupta will lead the company’s Office of AI. He will lead AI strategy, research, innovation, governance and adoption. His responsibilities will include Rackspace Technology and its customers. The appointment bolsters the company’s enterprise AI capabilities. Chetan Gupta draws on his global experience in AI research
Gupta, who spent almost a decade with Hitachi, is joining Rackspace Technology. During his tenure he led global AI research initiatives. He was general manager of the Advanced AI Center in Japan. He was also Vice President of the Industrial AI Lab in North America. He also headed the Global AI Center of Excellence at Hitachi.
His work contributed to the development of Physical AI at Hitachi. The work included railroads, energy grids, factories and buildings. They require high institutional accountability and operational reliability. Compliance with jurisdictional requirements is also demanded. Also, they give little room for system failures.
Gupta had spent seven years at HP Labs before moving to Hitachi. He turned advanced AI research there into deployed solutions. His work spanned logistics, manufacturing, energy and mobility. He has worked in AI research and engineering throughout his career. He is the author of about 300 papers and patents. He has also coached AI researchers and engineers.

His academic background is a complement to his experience in enterprise AI research. At the same time, he has experience in a number of mission critical industries. Gupta will add a research as well as operational perspective to Rackspace Technology.
