Toshiba TXZ+ M4V microcontrollers enter engineering sample phase Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has announced the latest TXZ+™ Family Entry-Class M4V Group for secure system control applications. The new Toshiba TXZ+ M4V microcontrollers are based on a floating-point unit (FPU) Arm® Cortex®-M4 core. And they improve data management, support a reliable operation across industrial equipment and IoT devices and increase security.
More and more devices are being connected, and manufacturers are relying more and more on remote monitoring, over-the-air (OTA) updates and cloud connectivity. Thus, these technologies make for more efficient maintenance and operations. But they also underscore the importance of better safeguards against hacking, software tampering and online dangers. Therefore, developers now need microcontrollers to protect software assets, handle system logs, and deliver uniform performance over the complete product lifecycle.
Toshiba has formed the TXZ+ M4V Group to address the industry’s changing requirements. The company maintained the flexibility and simplicity of use of its existing standard microcontrollers. At the same time it also introduced stronger security and advanced data management capabilities. Additionally, the devices include a multi-layered security architecture combining access control, memory protection and execution control. This improves system security and reduces the risks of unauthorized access and program tampering.
Toshiba Boosts Security and Performance for IoT Applications
The new microcontrollers are based on an Arm® Cortex®-M4 core with integrated FPU and can run up to 80MHz clock speed. Thus, their processing power and real-time performance are suitable for modern system control applications. In addition, the devices can be used in a wide variety of consumer electronics and industrial control systems.
The microcontrollers include 128KB of code flash memory, 64KB of data flash memory and 32KB of RAM onboard. Dedicated data flash memory is used to securely store rewritable information, such as configuration settings and operational logs. So that the developers could effectively process the data according to the working condition of equipment.
The products also run from a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V. They also have a high speed oscillator with ±1% accuracy. Therefore, designers can reduce external component count while increasing design flexibility. These specifications enable the microcontrollers to operate in consumer and industrial systems with 5V power supplies.
The devices also include all the peripheral functions necessary for the control of the system. These include a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), timers, UART, SPI, I2C, and DMA interfaces. The company has also added its Advanced Programmable Motor Control Circuit 2 (A-PMD2) for effective control of brushless DC motors for a broad spectrum of applications.
Another key addition is the integrated Serial Memory Interface (SMIF). This interface maps external serial flash memory into the processor address space and gives direct access to external serial flash memory. So, developers are able to achieve high-speed memory access with less CPU workload via hardware control. This stores firmware, logs, and large volumes of data efficiently, making the devices ideal for IoT products and systems with OTA support.
To ease product development, Toshiba also offers a full evaluation environment with the engineering samples. The company offers starter kits, sample software, CMSIS-compliant drivers and compatibility with leading integrated development environments (IDEs). Thus, developers may smoothly switch from product evaluation to application development.
Toshiba also announced it will be adding to its development resources and technical documentation. The company wants to help its customers to develop secure, flexible and reliable embedded systems and to update its standard microcontroller portfolio in line with the changing market needs.
