Nebius Wins Approval for Massive Gigawatt-Scale AI Factory in Missouri

Nebius

The AI cloud company Nebius recently received approval from the Independence City Council for a major development plan to construct a brand-new, gigawatt-scale AI factory. This move will enable Nebius to start constructing the largest campus the United States has ever seen. The facility will have a massive power capacity of 1.2 GW when completed. Additionally, the move marks a major milestone for the global AI cloud company. The infrastructure will enable massive machine learning operations for developers around the world. Therefore, the economy will receive a major boost from the high-tech facility.

“Independence will be our largest AI factory in the United States to date, and we are fully committed to making it a project the city is proud of,” said Arkady Volozh, CEO of Nebius. “This is our first project of this scale, but not the last.”

“We are building AI infrastructure at scale, and we are doing it in a way that genuinely works for the communities where we operate,” said John Sutter, VP US Public Affairs at Nebius. “We are grateful to everyone who supported this project, and we intend to earn the trust of all Independence residents not through promises, but through results.”

Economic Impact and Community Commitment

The multi-building campus spans 400 acres of land in Missouri. Initially, the construction phase will create 1,200 skilled jobs in the local trades. Once operational, the site will create 130 permanent jobs in high-tech fields. Thus, the project further cements the region’s reputation as a high-tech leader. The company has planned the facility with sustainability at the forefront. Specifically, the closed-loop cooling system ensures very low levels of water consumption.

This level of consumption is on par with an office building. Further, the facility will incorporate noise-reducing technology, ensuring the local environment is protected. Nebius has also planned a wide-ranging community benefits program. Specifically, the local residents will have access to STEM education and AI literacy programs. Additionally, the company will make payments of $650 million to local taxing jurisdictions. This will be used to support local schools and first responders over the next twenty years. As the company enters this new phase, they are committed to transparent results.
