Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering has announced a new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI), set to launch in Fall 2025. The interdisciplinary program aims to shape ethical, industry-ready AI professionals equipped with both technical expertise and real-world experience.

Responding to the rising demand for skilled AI talent, the MSAI program combines a rigorous curriculum with practical training. It offers two distinct tracks—Computer Science and Engineering (CSEN) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECEN)—catering to students with varying technical backgrounds.

“This program marks a bold step in preparing the next wave of AI leaders,” said Kendra Sharp, Dean of the School of Engineering. “With distinct software and hardware pathways, built-in ethics training, and partnerships across Silicon Valley, our graduates will be ready to lead AI innovation with purpose.”

The CSEN track emphasizes algorithms, computational theory, and software design, ideal for those with a computer science or software engineering background. Meanwhile, the ECEN track focuses on hardware-centric AI, including robotics, IoT, and chip design, suited for electrical and computer engineering students.

Both tracks share a common structure covering:

  • Core subjects in mathematics, ethics, and professional development
  • Foundational AI topics such as machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning
  • Specialized electives within each concentration
  • A capstone AI practicum, built in collaboration with Silicon Valley industry partners

“AI is evolving at a rapid pace, and our responsibility is to ensure it evolves ethically,” said Yi Fang, professor of computer science and director of the Responsible AI initiative at SCU. “Our graduates will not only master the tech but also understand its societal implications.”

Rooted in the University’s Impact 2030 strategic plan, the MSAI program promotes interdisciplinary learning, industry engagement, and responsible innovation. Graduates will be equipped to lead in sectors like healthcare, energy, transportation, finance, and semiconductors—guided by Santa Clara’s Jesuit mission of social responsibility and service to the greater good.
