50G PON reached a significant milestone as Adtran announced that TOHKnet successfully completed Japan’s first live network trial demonstrating the coexistence of 50G PON, XGS-PON and EPON on a single fiber. The demonstration took place in Sendai using Adtran’s SDX 6400 Series OLT. Moreover, the trial confirmed that three generations of passive optical network technologies can operate simultaneously in a live service environment without affecting existing services.
The successful demonstration provides network operators with a practical approach to introducing 50G PON while preserving current broadband services. During the demonstration, TOHKnet deployed Adtran’s SDX 6400 Series, a high-capacity software-defined optical line terminal built to support next-generation fiber broadband technologies. In addition, the platform combined 50G PON, XGS-PON and EPON capabilities over a single fiber infrastructure. Consequently, TOHKnet evaluated how operators can introduce next-generation broadband technology alongside existing access networks without making major modifications to the optical distribution network.
The modular architecture also enables service providers to manage network performance, deployment schedules and capacity expansion according to customer requirements.
