Semtech SurgeSwitch Shields Cobots Against Surge and ESD Damage

Semtech SurgeSwitch

Semtech Corporation has unveiled a fresh addition to its SurgeSwitch product line. The Nasdaq-listed company (SMTC) builds high-performance semiconductors. These chips power AI data center networking worldwide. They also support connected IoT devices globally. Today, Semtech introduced the TDS2621LP device. This chip joins the Semtech SurgeSwitch family. Consequently, it targets 24V DC power buses specifically. Industrial robotics and collaborative robots need this protection. So do automated manufacturing systems across the sector. The TDS2621LP delivers near-constant clamping voltage consistently. Furthermore, it meets IEC 61000-4-5 surge compliance standards. Its compact 1.6mm² footprint replaces bulkier legacy devices. Therefore, engineers gain smaller, more efficient protection solutions.

Why Cobots Need Better Surge Protection

Robotic Semtech SurgeSwitch systems keep shrinking in size. Meanwhile, they move closer to human workers. As a result, safety-critical I/O modules face harsher conditions. Electrostatic discharge and surge risks increase significantly. Inductive loads create major challenges here. Servo motors, electromagnetic brakes, and pneumatic solenoids switch constantly. Each shift sees thousands of switching cycles. Consequently, high-energy transients strike the 24V DC bus directly. This bus feeds sensitive control circuitry throughout the system. Traditional TVS diodes struggle under these conditions. Their clamping voltage rises with peak pulse current. Additionally, voltage shifts across industrial temperature ranges. Thus, protection margins become unpredictable for designers. Engineers must over-specify downstream components as a workaround.

“As robots and cobots pack more electronics into smaller spaces, critical margin for protection error shrinks while transient energy on the 24 V bus grows,” said Tamir Reshef, vice president of marketing and applications, analog and mixed signal products group at Semtech. “TDS2621LP solves density and footprint issues with near-constant clamping voltage at full pulse current, offering robotics system designers predictable headroom.”

How TDS2621LP Improves on Traditional Diodes

The TDS2621LP builds on proven Semtech SurgeSwitch architecture. However, it advances beyond conventional PN-junction methods. Instead, it uses a surge-rated FET design. This FET operates as a precision voltage-controlled switch. Unlike standard TVS diodes, results stay consistent. SurgeSwitch offers a uniform clamping voltage of 35V. This holds true at 24A across an 8/20 μs pulse. Additionally, dynamic resistance stays remarkably low at 32mΩ. This performance remains steady across the full pulse current range.

Target Applications and Specifications

The TDS2621LP Semtech SurgeSwitch suits many industrial applications. These include cobot joint electronics and controller boards. Industrial robot input lines also benefit greatly. Autonomous mobile robots and AGVs need this protection too. PLC I/O modules and fieldbus interfaces qualify as well. This covers PROFIBUS, EtherCAT, and IO-Link systems specifically. Factory automation solenoid valve drivers gain protection. Smart sensor nodes and industrial sensor lines benefit similarly. USB Type-C industrial ports use this technology too. Finally, IoT edge devices running on 24V DC infrastructure qualify.

Key specifications define the device clearly. Maximum working voltage reaches 26.4V. This matches IEC tolerance bands for 24V DC systems. Peak pulse current hits 24A under IEC 61000-4-5 testing. Maximum clamping voltage stays at 35V during 24A surges. Dynamic resistance remains low at 32mΩ. The package uses a compact DFN 1.6mm² footprint. It features a practical 2-lead design overall.
