Renesas Opens Physical AI & Robotics Lab in Beijing to Drive Next-Gen Robotics Development

Renesas

Renesas Electronics Corporation has officially launched its Physical AI & Robotics Lab in Beijing, China. The Tokyo-based semiconductor leader made the announcement today. This purpose-built facility positions Renesas at the forefront of physical AI innovation globally.

The new lab will allow customers to demonstrate, validate, and co-develop next-generation robotic systems. Furthermore, it will serve as a central hub for Renesas’ physical AI strategy. The facility supports every stage — from proof-of-concept through large-scale deployment.

What Is Physical AI and Why Does It Matter?

Physical AI marks the next major evolution in artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional digital AI, physical AI systems operate directly in the real world. Therefore, these systems must perceive, decide, and act safely in real time. They also require deterministic behavior under dynamic conditions.

Robotics, especially humanoid robots, exemplifies the physical AI category. These systems demand seamless integration of embedded processing, sensing, actuation, power management, software, and development tools. Consequently, the hardware-software synergy becomes absolutely critical.

The Beijing lab opening also follows a key internal milestone. Renesas established its dedicated Physical AI Division on July 1, 2026. This move further reinforces physical AI as a core secular growth driver for the company.

Renesas Eyes 70% Humanoid Robot BOM Coverage

Ivo Marocco, Vice President and Head of UX at Renesas, underlined the commercial opportunity clearly.

“Humanoid robots are becoming more sophisticated and complex, driving demand for hardware and software systems that must work together seamlessly,” said Ivo Marocco, Vice President and Head of UX at Renesas. “Today, Renesas can address roughly 30% of the humanoid robot BOM, and we see an opportunity to expand that coverage to 70% through our strengths in control, power, sensing, AI, software and ecosystem solutions. Our new lab will help customers validate complete systems and accelerate the deployment of next-generation robotics innovations.”

This expansion signals a major growth ambition. Renesas clearly targets a dominant share of the humanoid robotics supply chain. Additionally, the company plans to leverage its existing strengths across control, power, and edge AI verticals.

China Leads Robotics Adoption — Renesas Moves to Capitalize

China remains one of the world’s most advanced robotics markets. Renesas recognizes this and moves decisively to deepen its presence there.

Yvonne Liu, Vice President and President of Renesas China, elaborated on the strategic importance of the Beijing location.

“China continues to lead in robotics innovation and adoption with a deep customer base, a highly collaborative ecosystem and a comprehensive supply chain service system,” said Yvonne Liu, Vice President and President of Renesas China. “Renesas will leverage its Physical AI Lab in Beijing and its technology capabilities to collaborate closely with customers, ecosystem partners, universities and startups. As part of Renesas’ key strategy in China, this lab will accelerate the engineering implementation of physical AI systems.”

The lab, therefore, goes far beyond a product showcase. It actively supports validation and co-development of complete robotics solutions. Moreover, it connects customer needs with ecosystem resources and advanced technology capabilities.

Full-Stack Engineering Hub for Robotics Solutions

The Beijing facility integrates hardware, software, AI modeling, control systems, power supply, sensing, and system-level verification. Together, these capabilities support the entire engineering development journey. Teams can progress smoothly from initial design to full deployment.

Renesas brings decades of automotive and industrial engineering experience to this initiative. The company combines its hardware technologies with functional safety features and edge AI capabilities. It also integrates Renesas 365, its cloud-based electronics development platform, into the workflow.

As a result, Renesas helps customers design robotic systems that are safer, smarter, and more scalable. The company covers critical system domains,  including brain and motion control, sensing, actuation, and power management, through a comprehensive portfolio.

Physical AI and humanoid robotics represent a defining technology wave. Renesas positions itself firmly at the center of that wave with this landmark Beijing lab launch.
