Kioxia Corporation announced the new KIOXIA NX1 Series of E1.S PCIe® 5.0 NVMe™ data center solid-state drives. The newest family of SSDs is also the company’s first to feature support for direct liquid cooling. The new drives also feature Kioxia’s next-generation in-house controller architecture. This architecture provides world-class storage capabilities today and a solid foundation for future innovation.
The KIOXIA XD Series is succeeded by the KIOXIA NX1 Series. It also uses PCIe® 5.0 technology to deliver greater performance to cloud service providers and hyperscale operators. The new SSDs are about 38 percent faster in sequential write performance compared to the previous generation. They also deliver about 20 percent faster random write performance. This allows organizations to scale storage responsiveness without sacrificing operational efficiency.
The drives were designed specifically for GPU-enabled servers and high-performance computing environments. This means the new SSDs offer the speed and efficiency of today’s AI workloads. At the same time, they allow hyperscale operators to extract the most performance from their infrastructure without increasing power consumption.
As AI deployments keep expanding, storage infrastructure needs to evolve along with them. This means that the E1.S form factor enables operators to increase storage density and support advanced thermal management. The new drives also support direct liquid cooling configurations that are cold plate compatible. This allows for more efficient heat dissipation in accelerator-rich AI server environments. Hence, organizations can sustain a steady level of performance under high workloads.
NX1 Series High Performance and Advanced Cooling
The KIOXIA NX1 series is available in the E1.S 9.5 mm and E1.S 15 mm form factors. The 9.5 mm edition supports direct liquid cooling as well as conventionally used air cooling. The 15 mm version is intended for air cooling installations. That flexibility allows data center operators to select configurations that best fit their infrastructure needs.
The new SSDs deliver 1 Drive Write Per Day (1 DWPD) for read intensive applications. It also comes with capacities ranging from 1.92TB to 15.36TB, so there are many storage options to choose from for enterprise and hyperscale environments.
The drives also support PCIe® 5.0, NVMe™ 2.0 and Open Compute Project (OCP) Datacenter NVMe™ SSD 2.6 specifications. In addition, they support NVMe Flexible Data Placement (FDP), which helps improve storage efficiency for demanding enterprise applications.
The NX1 Series uses Kioxia’s eighth-generation KIOXIA BiCS FLASH™ TLC memory technology, with CMOS directly bonded to Array (CBA) architecture. Additionally, customers are able to choose an optional TCG Opal-compliant Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) security model for added data protection.
The company is currently sampling the KIOXIA NX1 Series with select hyperscale customers. The new SSD family will also be displayed at FMS: The Future of Memory and Storage in Santa Clara, Calif., Aug. 4-6, Kioxia said.
