Honeywell Technologies has deployed its connected cabin automation system across Royal Caribbean’s three in-service Icon Class ships. The fleetwide deployment marks Honeywell Technologies’ largest cruise hospitality technology installation to date. The cabin automation system now powers more than 8,400 staterooms aboard the world’s most innovative cruise ships. Moreover, it delivers automated comfort, convenience and efficiency to hundreds of thousands of passengers annually. At the same time, it helps crews operate the ships more efficiently.

Honeywell Technologies’ cabin automation solution lets guests personalize their stateroom environment. Guests control climate, lighting and room features through automation. In addition, they can adjust cabin settings via the Royal Caribbean mobile app from anywhere onboard. The system also monitors environmental conditions and equipment performance continuously. As a result, it adjusts cabin settings automatically. This approach balances guest comfort with streamlined service and efficient operations. Guests also enjoy a more seamless experience inside and outside the stateroom.

“Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class has redefined what guests expect from a family vacation at sea,” said Juan Picon, President and CEO of Honeywell Technologies Building Automation. “Across more than 2,800 staterooms on each ship, Honeywell Technologies’ connected automation solution now helps create a more seamless and personalized guest experience while giving operators the control needed to help manage some of the most advanced vessels in operation today.”

How the Connected Cabin Automation System Works

Fully programmable logic controllers power the system. They serve as the hub of each stateroom. Furthermore, they connect cabin systems, shipboard networks and operational platforms into a unified experience. The technology enables centralized monitoring, automation and control of the following:

  • HVAC: Automated climate control system that adjusts heating and cooling based on environmental conditions, operating mode and guest preferences. There are special modes for comfort, humidity control and energy saving. For example, the system reduces cooling when balcony doors or windows are open. Honeywell Technologies’ platform is constantly modulating HVAC performance to meet real-time demand. Thus, it improves efficiency without sacrificing comfort.
  • Scene lighting and cabin ambiance: Guests select from custom settings that automatically adjust lighting and other cabin features. These settings create the desired atmosphere.
  • Window and blind controls: Platform is automatically monitoring and controlling motorized windows, curtains and blinds. This adds comfort to guests. If necessary, centralized control can also help with special operational and safety procedures.
  • Automated environmental controls: The platform integrates with onboard systems to automatically adjust cabin settings while guests are away from the ship.

Why Cabin Automation Matters for Cruise Lines

Cruise lines work to elevate guest experiences while improving energy efficiency and operational performance. Therefore, cabin automation is becoming increasingly essential. According to SINTEF’s CruiZE research project, onboard hotel facilities may account for up to 40% of a cruise ship’s total energy use. SINTEF conducted the project in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and industry partners.
