GBI Chooses Nokia to Build High-Capacity Network in the Middle East

Network in Middle East

Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has chosen Nokia Oyj to build a new ultra-high-capacity terrestrial network aimed at faster, more resilient connectivity across the Middle East. The network will deliver 100 G-400 G services designed for cloud providers, enterprises and carriers.

GBI will deploy Nokia’s 1830 Global Express (GX) optical platform to create a new terrestrial route through Iraq. This route will provide an alternative to traditional subsea corridors. It will enhance connectivity between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia by improving latency, capacity, and resilience.

Once operational, this network is expected to support more than 50 terabits of capacity. It will serve as a backbone for GBI’s digital infrastructure aimed at meeting the region’s expanding data demand.

GBI’s CEO, Ahmad Mohamed Al‑Kuwari said the collaboration with Nokia marks a major step forward for enhanced connectivity and digital transformation across key markets. Meanwhile, Nokia’s Senior VP for Network Infrastructure in the Middle East and Africa, Roque Lozano, remarked that the 1830 GX platform enables the scale, speed, and resilience needed for next-gen connectivity.

Founded in 2008, GBI connects societies and empowers economies through its infrastructure network, providing scalable solutions from east to west via the Middle East. Nokia underscores its leadership in mobile, fixed and cloud networks, delivering high-performance, reliable and sustainable connectivity worldwide.

The project relies on GBI’s complete ownership of infrastructure. It also depends on GBI’s promise to meet the increasing capacity needs in the region. With the new route through Iraq, GBI and Nokia plan to offer a strong and varied infrastructure base.
