The pace of change in research is accelerating. Nowhere is that clearer than when examining artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on scholarly communications. AI is transforming research by making data analysis faster, by alleviating the day-to-day burden of mundane administrative tasks, and by making content more accessible to researchers around the world, regardless of their primary language.

To get an understanding of the state of AI in research, we surveyed 2,400 authors globally about their views on where AI has already impacted their work and where they see the most potential. We shared the results of that survey as the ExplanAItions study, published in both 2024 and 2025. In just one year, the use of AI has shot up, from 57% to 84%.
