IQM Quantum Computers has announced a major milestone. Consequently, the company revealed its upgrade path for a logical qubits quantum computer. This deployment targets the LUMI AI Factory, which CSC – IT Center for Science leads. As a result, the initiative will boost R&D toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. Furthermore, it will strengthen hybrid computing advancements across Europe.
The system carries the name LUMI-IQ. Indeed, it forms a core part of the broader LUMI AI Factory initiative. The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking jointly funds this project. Additionally, Finland, Czechia, Norway, and Poland all participate as funding countries. Notably, CSC will host LUMI-IQ at its new Kajaani data center in Finland.
The rollout follows three distinct steps. First, IQM will install a Halocene H4 system in 2027. This stage brings 150 physical qubits along with early error correction. Then, in 2028, an upgrade will lower logical error rates. Meanwhile, this phase also enables real-time error correction. Finally, IQM will install a Halocene H5 system in 2029, completing the path toward early fault-tolerant computing.
Logical Qubits Enable Advanced Quantum Operations
After the final upgrade, LUMI-IQ will sustain logical qubits through fast, real-time feedback. Moreover, it will support full logical operations, including lattice surgery and T-gate teleportation. Using distance-3 surface code and colour code, the system will run up to nine logical qubits. Beyond that, it can encode logical qubits to distance 11 with surface code and distance 9 with colour code.
Physical qubits alone remain unstable for complex tasks. However, combining them through quantum error correction creates logical qubits. These logical qubits offer far greater stability. Therefore, they become essential for real-world quantum applications.

Ultimately, LUMI-IQ will integrate into the LUMI-AI environment. Together, both systems will create a hybrid platform combining HPC, AI, and quantum computing. This approach should unlock new scientific workloads across Europe.
