Semtech Launches 10G PON Chipset to Power Triple-Generation 50G OLT Modules

Semtech Corporation has announced a breakthrough chipset for 10G PON applications. The company revealed this industry-first solution today. Semtech designed the chipset specifically for optical line terminal (OLT) systems. As a result, this launch strengthens Semtech’s position in high-performance semiconductor technology. Notably, Semtech powers AI data center networking worldwide. Additionally, the company supports intelligent, connected IoT devices across global markets.

Meanwhile, network operators are scaling up their infrastructure rapidly. Consequently, many are moving toward 50G PON deployments. However, equipment vendors face a significant challenge. They must support multiple PON generations simultaneously. These include GPON, XGS-PON, and 50G PON technologies. Furthermore, vendors need to fit all these within compact SFP-DD module designs. Therefore, power efficiency has become a critical priority for 50G OLT systems.

New Chipset Delivers Integration and Power Savings

To address these challenges, Semtech developed two key components. First, the GN7153C serves as the OLT combo IC. Second, the GN28L46 functions as a burst-mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA). Together, these chips offer unprecedented integration levels. Moreover, they provide low power consumption and design flexibility. Consequently, optical module manufacturers can now build next-generation fiber broadband infrastructure more efficiently.

Specifically, the GN7153C integrates a dual-rate burst-mode limiting amplifier. It also includes laser bias driver outputs. When paired with the GN28L46, this creates a complete solution. This combination supports XGS-PON applications effectively. Additionally, it complies fully with ITU-T G.9807.1 standards.

Importantly, the GN7153C achieves major power savings. It uses lower supply voltages throughout its design. As a result, it delivers up to 400mW savings per port. Across a fully populated 16-port terminal, this adds up significantly. In fact, total system-level savings reach 6.5W.

Furthermore, the GN28L46 includes an accurate RSSI mirror feature. This works alongside the burst-mode sample-and-hold circuit. Together, they improve overall accuracy substantially. Also, this design eliminates the need for standalone RSSI controllers. Thus, component count and BOM costs decrease considerably.
