Mitsubishi Electric and Chiba Institute of Technology to Co-Research and Build Homegrown Physical AI

Mitsubishi Electric and Chiba Institute of Technology to Co-Research

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation signed a basic agreement with Chiba Institute of Technology. They will research and develop homegrown physical AI technologies together. This new technology targets both public and private sector applications. Furthermore, the partners will build a dedicated co-creation center. This facility will actively promote the commercialization of AI robotics solutions. The formal agreement lasts three years and ends in April 2029.

The engineering project utilizes a variety of autonomously controlled robots. Specifically, the development involves multi-legged walking robots and humanoid robots. Drone-type robots will also play a key role in the research. Mitsubishi Electric provides diverse manufacturing knowledge cultivated across many industrial sectors. Additionally, the company brings maintenance and inspection expertise from infrastructure projects. These infrastructure projects include vital water-environments and power systems.

Advanced Motion Control and Robotics

Mitsubishi Electric previously created factory automation systems. For example, it developed the MELFA ASSISTA collaborative robot. Through these projects, the company created highly accurate motion-control and sensing technologies. These safety systems will enhance the homegrown physical AI initiative.

Meanwhile, Chiba Institute of Technology operates the Future Robotics Technology Center. This center possesses large-scale physical model technologies for motion performance. These systems respond reflexively and flexibly to changing conditions. The institution designs solutions for advanced tasks in real-world environments. For instance, they build mobile robots for nuclear power plants. Their machines also assist with disaster site investigation and rescue tasks.
